I work back through the statements, sales reports and agreements to understand how a balance was calculated. If something is wrong, I trace where it began and explain what needs correcting, with the supporting detail so you can follow the answer.
I help put the day-to-day work in order: who supplies the information, how deals are recorded, when statements go out and how payments are followed through. The people doing the work need to understand the process and have somewhere to record what they've learned.
I help with the terms, data and reconciliation needed to move from one royalty system to another. That includes checking the new calculations against the agreements and existing records while the regular statements still have to go out. I've worked on both the label and software-consultant sides.
I read the agreements and turn the accounting terms into something the team and the system can use: royalty rates, calculation bases, advances, recoupment, territories and reporting requirements. When the wording leaves a question, I flag it for the people who need to resolve it.
I help check SoundExchange and neighboring-rights registrations, including which recordings and people are represented and who is collecting where. We can then follow up on missing information or unclaimed income, with a record of what has been checked and what still needs an answer.
